In the face of the devastation that has been wrought by the earthquake in Haiti, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is already hard at work to help the people there. If you would like to assist in the effort, here are ways you can do that:
1. Pray for the people of Haiti and all of the relief workers who are there.
2. Give financially to UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Make your check out to University UMC and mark “Haiti Advance, #418325” in the memo line. Bring your check to church on Sunday or mail it to the church office (150 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill NC 27514). You can also make a donation on-line at www.umcorhaiti.org. One hundred percent of every donated dollar goes directly to relief through UMCOR.
3. Donate supplies. Collection boxes are available in the main church hallway. Items needed include: Blankets, Tarps and Health Kits. Note: We can no longer collect food, clothes and other items.
A Health Kit contains these specific items:
1 hand towel (15” x 25” up to 17” x 27”)
1 wash cloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz and up)
1 toothbrush (single brush only in original wrapper; no child-sized brushes)
1 large tube of toothpaste
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
All items should be placed inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag. No other items should be included in the Health Kit.
