Bible and Daily Living
Led by Joe Laton, 9:45 a.m., East Parlor
This class will begin with a study of the development of the Bible: when and how it was canonized; which books were left out and why; and an explanation of the “Q” or “Source” that was used by Matthew and Mark in their gospels. Following this topic, the class will focus on a specific study which could be Acts or some of the minor Old Testament prophets. Our intent is to bring the Bible into our daily lives in all that we do.
Buying Happiness
Led by Stacy (Wood) King, 10:00 a.m., Hyde Hall
Money is often a taboo subject in church, but how we make choices and spend our dollars has a profound impact on our lives and the world around us. How does our faith inform us as consumers? Each week, we’ll talk about how to relate to money in a way that promotes health, happiness and opportunity. This semester-long class is aimed at adults in their 20s and 30s and will be formed in clusters of “small groups” organized by age and/or life situation (e.g., college students, recent grads, professionals, newlyweds, etc.). Please email Stacy if you wish to attend.
Christian Parenting
Led by Judy and Jim Wilson, 9:45 a.m., Room 207
This class will discuss important issues surrounding the challenges of parenting. We will use two books by Dr. Kevin Leman: Becoming the Parent God Wants You to Be as well as Have a New Kid by Friday – How to Change Your Child’s Attitude, Behavior and Character in 5 Days (book/DVD series). Dr. Leman is a father of five children, well-known psychologist, Christian parenting expert and best-selling author. God wants us to be good parents. We will use God’s wisdom found in the Bible to guide and encourage us on this parenting journey. Our desire is to raise children who are responsible, resourceful and respectful.
Christianity and Literature
Led by Joe Flora, 9:45 a.m., Room 205
This class welcomes all who wish to consider issues of the good, the true and the beautiful through the study of literature. Typically fiction is the favored genre, but we sometimes study poetry and other prose forms that speak to our religious quests. All of the arts are honored in our fellowship. This fall we will be focusing on Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find, an unforgettable gathering of short stories that established O’Connor’s reputation. The Wesley tradition of joyous music continues as an abiding feature of the class.
Faith Meets Life
Led by Jim Anderson and Jim Booterbaugh, 9:45 a.m., Hyde Hall
Continuing in their tradition of connecting Christian belief and daily life through engaging discussions, study and fun, this class will begin a series on “Health and Wholeness” from the Life Search Series. Come for a time to challenge your faith and have fellowship with others.
Spiritual Growth Class
Led by Don Schoene, 9:45 a.m., Hyde Hall
This class begins with 20 minutes of centering prayer, followed by the discussion of an excerpt taken from major Christian writings of men and women over the centuries. We are using Spiritual Classics, a book edited by Richard Foster and Emilie Griffin, which organizes these inspirational writings into 12 spiritual disciplines. We shall discuss worship, guidance and celebration this fall. Each lesson stands alone. If you wish to experience centering prayer and also participate in inspirational discussions for personal spiritual growth, please join us.
Sunshine Class
Led by Kris Parks and Donna Tabor, 9:45 a.m., Room 201
Designed for youth and adults who have special needs.
Women’s Christ Care Group
Led by rotating members of the group, 9:15 a.m., Bride’s Room
This class usually chooses one to two books to study in depth during the school year with group members facilitating the discussion. In the past the focus has been on topics such as prayer, spiritual growth and forgiveness. The class has studied various authors including Richard Rohr, Marcus Borg, Joyce Rupp and Thomas Merton.
College Café
Led by Addie Jo Schonewolf and Sara Beth Pannell, 12:15 p.m., Youth Lounge
After enjoying lunch together (provided for free each week), this group will egage in thought-provoking discussion based on a video curriculum and real-life experience. All students are welcome.
